1. What’s your real name and DJ Name?
My full name is Paul Shudlik and my DJ name is UNKL PAULY.
2. How did you get into DJing?
I have always had a passion for music growing up. I spent most of my teenage years frequenting Raves all over Toronto. I fell in love with Jungle/Drum n Bass and then later House Music when I saw Carl Cox perform live. I bought my 1st pair of turntables at 19 . I took a 10 year break and at the beginning of the pandemic I decided to master the craft of DJing and spent numerous hours practicing and fie tuning my skills.
3. What inspired you to become a DJ?
My inspiration was attending massive warehouse raves and seeing the local talent control the crowd with their flawless mixes and song selection. It was a rush and I knew I wanted to be a part of that.
4. What do you enjoy most about DJing?
Making people dance and smile. I absolutely love seeing people react to my sets and vibe on the dancefloor. It’s all about peace, love, unity and respect. PLUR.
5. How would you describe your music style and what makes it unique?
My music style is very techy. I love hard hitting basslines mixed in with some groovy, fun vocals. I am mostly a party DJ and love to throw down tech, funky, tribal and underground house infused with some old school hip hop. I believe I am unique with my track selections and how I mix. I utilize my hot cues and EFX to make a blended sound that will ensure you get out of your seat and dance.
6. What has been your favorite gig or event to play at so far?
My favorite gig so far would be City at Night with my White Rabbit Crew. I also like the events that WamBamHouseJam and I put together in the summer on the beach here in Ottawa. We have big sound and big names come and play and the vibes are incredible.
7. Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Carl Cox, The Prodigy, Lexlay, James Hype, Ryan Dunlop, Fatboy Slim and Roger Sanchez.
8. Can you tell us about any upcoming projects or releases you have coming up?
I have a gig upcoming on February 18th at City at Night with my White Rabbit Crew that I am very excited about.
9. How do you stay up to date with new music and trends in the industry?
I am constantly searching for new tracks and sounds that will go well with my style of DJing. I am also listening to many artists sets in my downtime and picking up little gems to add to my collection. I also frequent the clubs and events to listen to local talents and newer artists.
10. What advice do you have for aspiring DJs?
Don’t get into your head too much. Just have fun. When it stops being fun than take a break. Practice, practice, practice. And go and support your local fellow DJs and network.
11. How do you think the role of a DJ has changed over the years?
It has changed since the pandemic. The whole dynamic has switched from live events to virtual/online events and I forsee this becoming the new norm.
12. How long have you been streaming on Twitch?
Almost 1 year in May.
13. Who are your favorite Streamers and why?
Wambamhousejam as he has a very similar style of music taste that I do. Ethan Dubb-great energy and DJ, Nikkid-same style as me, LavondaRocks-great energy, Proper Sessions-great energy, Ugo flo, TYC crew, NBHD crew, I’ll house you crew, Martino Edwardo, Patrick Richard’s and there are sooo many more. Too many to be honest. I feel like we have an amazing community of talented DJs and streamers.
14. Did covid and recent lock-downs influence you to start streaming on Twitch?
Yes it definitely did. I found it to be a very useful tool to connect to the people that love Electronic Music as much as I do. I have also met so many amazing people through Twitch.
15. Anything else you want to add? Good time to shamelessly promote yourself.
I am extremely humbled and privileged to have met so many amazing streamers, DJs and people from Twitch. It is such a strong community with so much support and love. I am excited to sew what the future holds. And I will be celebrating my 1k followers shortly and am extremely thankful to the community for showing me support. I cannot wait to work with more streamers and build our community even more. If we work together, we grow together. Much love.
